Milking Data: The Future of Dairy Farming

Every milking can now generate thousands of data points – transforming how farmers manage their herd. UK dairy farming is moving beyond tradition into a world where technology and data can drive every decision. Modern systems don’t just milk cows—they monitor health, track behaviour, and optimise performance. For farmers, this means efficiency and profitability. For cows, it means better welfare and less stress.

“We live in a modern world now where data is key,” says Derrick Davies, Dairymaster UK Business Development Manager. “It’s quite a new thing for some farmers—the level of data that’s available – and this can benefit all farmers.”

Advanced platforms like Dairymaster’s DairyVue 360 and MooMonitor+ collect a wide range of metrics including milk yield, let down time, conductivity, and temperature. They also track rumination, lying time, feeding frequency, and activity patterns, alongside reproductive indicators such as heat detection based on movement and mounting behaviour. “Data is collected every milking,” explains Derrick. “We can monitor rumination, resting time, behaviour of a certain cow compared to cows in her group, and it highlights changes straight away – usually a good few days before it’s brought to the attention of the naked eye.”

These early warning systems have real impact. Detecting mastitis through conductivity monitoring can dramatically reduce clinical cases, cutting antibiotic use and improving recovery rates. “If we’re starting to see a fluctuation in milk quality, you can get it flagged immediately,” says Derrick. “That could result in using something other than antibiotics.” Beyond udder health, data also plays a vital role in fertility management and hoof health. Monitoring a cow’s activity can give early indication of coming into heat or lameness. Being able to detect the window for optimal insemination improves conception rates by reducing missed breeding windows. Likewise, a reduction in activity could indicate early lameness. Farms using automated health monitoring often experience fewer serious lameness cases, saving hundreds of pounds per incident in treatment and lost production.

Precision milking systems can personalise milking for each cow, suiting her needs. Swiftflo parlours are able to optimise pulsation and vacuum settings, reducing udder stress and improving milk let-down. Whilst automated cluster flushing and teat spraying are tailored to suit. Reducing bacterial contamination helps keep SCC consistently below the industry average of 170,000. This protects premium contracts and reduces waste from rejected milk batches.

Technology like DairyVue 360 transforms daily routines. Instead of relying on visual checks, farmers receive actionable insights on their phone or computer, allowing optimisation of their time. Drafting gates and automated sorting reduce handling touchpoints. Removing the need to fetch cows prevents unnecessarily disruption off the herd.  Health alerts allow planned veterinary visits rather than emergency calls, saving time and money. “A modern Swiftflo milking system isn’t just about harvesting milk—it’s an integral part of the cow herd management system,” Derrick emphasises.

DairyVue 360 allows farmers to share herd data with third parties, vets and nutritionists, enabling targeted advice and faster problem-solving. Nutritionists can adjust rations based on real-time rumination and feed intake, improving dry matter utilisation and increase the performance of the tailored ration. Vets can review alerts before visiting, ensuring treatments are precise and effective. “Involve people” says Derrick. “It’s a business. Share the data with your trusted advisors so they come prepared and bring quality advice.”

Robotic milking systems offer flexibility and reduce labour dependency at set times but require 24/7 monitoring. Whereas Swiftflo and DM3X parlours provide daily visual checks of each cow during milking and integrate seamlessly with herd management software. “Because we have all this technology now available on the modern dairy unit, the cow can now receive more bespoke attention,” says Derrick.

Environmental resilience is another consideration. “We have to minimise stress on cows,” Derrick explains. “Heat stress can affect fertility and milk production for weeks, even months. Ventilation, water availability, and cow comfort are crucial.” MooMonitor+ can monitor heat stress, helping farmers adapt housing and ventilation to suit the herd’s needs, improving cow comfort. “When a cow is stressed, we can expect to see a loss in yield and milk quality” explains Derrick.

While advanced parlours and robotics typically involve higher upfront costs – the payback is clear. Savings come from reduced labour, improved fertility, and higher milk yields. Farms using integrated monitoring often achieve a quicker return on investment (ROI), even on large setups. “Don’t just look at the upfront cost,” advises Derrick. “Consider the potential savings data management can provide”

Derrick also stresses the importance of future-proofing investments. “Succession planning is huge,” he says. “Every farmer wants to hand over their lifetime’s work, and if you get this right at the time you’re investing, it ring-fences your business for the future.” Systems should allow for expansion and easy integration of new software. “Build in room for growth and make the working environment appealing for the next generation,” he adds.

Technology, monitoring, and data management are no longer optional—they are essential. They improve cow welfare, enhance milk quality, and help make farms more profitable and sustainable. By embracing these innovations, UK dairy farmers can move from reactive management to proactive control, securing the future of their businesses and the wellbeing of their herds. “Don’t be frightened of new modern technology,” Derrick concludes. “There’s so much support to take you on the journey.”
