Think before you buy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before spending a penny, define your objectives. Do you want to increase cow numbers, improve efficiency, or enhance animal welfare? Derrick stresses, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to set your goals. Where do you want to be, what you want to achieve?\u201d Equally important is market demand. If you plan to boost milk production, will your processor pay as expected for the extra volume? Review your milk contract and local demand for dairy products. \u201cYou can go ahead and say I want to milk extra cows\u2026 but can you actually sell that milk?\u201d warns Derrick.<\/p>\n

Your farming system – grazing, semi-intensive, or fully housed – affects equipment needs. Grazing systems often suite lower-tech setups with less data monitoring, while high-input systems often benefit from advanced technology. \u201cGrazing systems commonly focus on low inputs with lower outputs\u2026 they tend not to go for so much of the data gathering,\u201d Derrick explains. Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n

A new parlour investment won\u2019t necessarily deliver full value if the surrounding infrastructure is poor. Derrick advises, \u201cLook at the infrastructure\u2026 it should consider cows and staff, automatic drafting can significantly help. Aim for a comfortable working environment and a layout which allows cows to express their natural behaviour.\u201d Stress-free cows and safe working conditions can improve productivity and staff retention. \u201cYou can install the expensive equipment, but if you ignore all the other things\u2026 you could have a bigger problem that has a bigger impact on profitability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Return on investment<\/strong><\/p>\n

The purchase price is only the starting point. True return on investment accounts for running costs – like electricity, water, and consumables. Find out the likely daily consumption. Derrick notes, \u201cRecently we were asked by a farmer planning his next investment what the electricity usage per a day for the proposed DM3X rotary parlour would be\u2026 a figure we could easily supply?\u201d Maintenance and servicing are equally critical. \u201cMilking equipment works 365 days a year\u2026 service is paramount,\u201d he says. Regular servicing prevents costly breakdowns and protects animal welfare. Replacement parts – liners and wear items – add up over time, investigate these costs before investing. A piece of kit may be cheaper to purchase than another, but if running and parts costs are higher over time, this will become a false economy. Labour and time savings also matter. Faster milking reduces labour hours and improves cow comfort and welfare. \u201cThe farmer very often doesn\u2019t put a cost on his time when he\u2019s stood there in the parlour,\u201d Derrick points out. Compliance costs are another hidden factor, with environmental regulations tightening. Investing in compliant systems now avoids potential penalties later.<\/p>\n

Payback<\/strong><\/p>\n

When modelling payback, don\u2019t assume everything will go perfectly. Derrick recommends using best, worst, and average-case scenarios based on five-year trends: \u201cDon\u2019t calculate your payback on the assumption that everything will go well for the next 10 years\u2026 because there\u2019s no guarantee.\u201d Market volatility is real. Milk prices fluctuate, and global events – from pandemics to geopolitical conflicts – can disrupt supply chains. \u201cNobody has a crystal ball\u2026 but you have to be prepared so your business can handle a certain degree of price changes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Few farmers can invest without borrowing. Funding options include bank loans, finance agreements, and hire purchase. Derrick advises, \u201cLook at the best deals\u2026 if the finance company offers a competitive deal with lower interest rates, I would go with them. If the banks give a better deal, I\u2019d go with the banks.\u201d Fixed interest rates offer predictability, while variable rates may suit later stages when cash flow stabilises. Payment structures should align with milk income; an initial pause or early lower payments can ease transition costs. Flexibility is key – ask the lender if you can adjust payments to suit seasonal cashflow and make extra payments without penalties. \u201cDon\u2019t be frightened of change,\u201d says Derrick. The quicker you repay, the less interest you pay, but balance this against other investment needs.<\/p>\n

Dairy investments often last decades, so build in adaptability. \u201cWhatever you\u2019re investing now, try and future-proof it so you can add on further investment,\u201d Derrick advises. For example, choose a Swiftflo or DM3X parlour, they can integrate new technology or expand capacity later. Factor in succession planning – will the next generation want to expand or diversify? Environmental compliance will evolve, and grant schemes may disappear. Planning for resilience means your business can adapt quickly to change.<\/p>\n

Scheduled servicing isn\u2019t a cost – it\u2019s insurance. \u201cWith good regular servicing you should get the best out of your investment\u2026 and your cows,\u201d Derrick says. Well-maintained equipment can maintain cow performance, boost efficiencies, and retain residual value. It also creates a safer, more motivating workplace: \u201cWhen you go into a nice dairy unit that\u2019s very well looked after\u2026 it\u2019s a comfortable place to be.\u201d Poor maintenance can lead to breakdowns that halt milking altogether\u2014a welfare issue as well as a financial one. \u201cYou can\u2019t afford to stop milking,\u201d Derrick warns. \u201cI\u2019d rather see milk in the tank and money in the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n

Data<\/strong><\/p>\n

Use this data to track ROI and adjust strategy. \u201cHave a system that can record as much data as possible just to see what\u2019s really working for your business,\u201d Derrick recommends. Investment isn\u2019t a one-off decision. Review performance regularly: \u201cLook at it regularly\u2026 are we on track or do we need to get back on track?\u201d Regular reviews allow you to act quickly if payback isn\u2019t on target – or accelerate repayment if cash flow improves.<\/p>\n

Before committing, ask yourself: What are my business goals for the next 5\u201320 years? Can my milk buyer handle increased production? What\u2019s the total cost of ownership – purchase, running, maintenance, labour? How will this investment improve efficiency and welfare? What financing option offers the best flexibility? Is the system future-proof and compliant with upcoming regulations? How will I monitor ROI and adjust if needed?<\/p>\n

Investing in dairy equipment is about more than buying kit – it\u2019s about understanding all the costs, building a resilient, efficient business. As Derrick sums up, \u201cBuild in some resilience and build in so that your business can evolve efficiently.\u201d Plan carefully, seek expert advice, and think long-term.
