Ashdale Farm Hosts Free On-Farm Open Day – Thursday May 2nd – 11:30am

This coming Thursday all roads lead to Horgan’s dairy farm otherwise known as “Ashdale Farm” in Garryduff, Colligan, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford on Thursday May 02nd between 11:30am and 4pm for an on-farm open day. Exciting dairy experts from Teagasc, O’Donovan Engineering, Deise Vets, Gain Feeds, Zoetis, Dairymaster and Cows DNA will be speaking.

    Driven by the family

Diarmuid Horgan’s sons Gerard and Tomas are the driving force, the adoption of the latest thinking and technology that has helped them to improve the farm while increasing cow numbers and yield. Central to this was the Horgan’s decision to upscale the entire milking setup.

Tomas Horgan comments “This is a chance for farmers to come and have a look around the parlour and its buildings, talk to the team that works with it, see the cows being milked at 3 pm and some of the parlours innovative features in action”.

The Horgan’s have chosen agriculture as their passion and have obtained the professionalism and expertise of many companies to better understand and address the real-world challenges faced by dairy farmers today.

    Getting technology right

Nelgara Steel Buildings have built state of the art housing facilities and advised on careful planning and design which is vital to get the best out of a new farm building.

Dairymaster installed a 50 unit Swiftflo revolver rotary milking parlour fully automated with the latest in hi-tech innovations. The revolutionary Dairymaster heat detection system, the MooMonitor, is also installed on farm.

Ashdale Farm receives guidance from Cows DNA, a recognised company which specialises in managed breeding programmes. Dr. Dan Ryan will launch their new unique USART technology to further improve fertility in herds on the day. This is an opportunity to see the impact of controlled breeding management as a driver of farm profitability.

Improve your herd nutrition and health

Gain Feeds give advice on the correct feeding and nutritional regime to best suit the herd in order to deliver better results on an on-going basis. Advice on quality medicines and vaccines will be available throughout the day from representatives of Zoetis.

O’Donovan Engineering installed housing facilities including cubicles, drinking troughs and mats. They will be on hand with great advice on layouts as well as demonstrations of TruTest weighing Equipment. Veterinary care is provided to Ashdale farm by Declan Gilchrist and his team at Deise vets, helping to deal with the various animal health challenges that can occur as herds expand.

Horgan’s have readily accepted technology and its ability to precisely automate tasks while ensuring cow comfort. That allows them to concentrate on the management of the farm to improve performance, reduce health issues and save labour.

    Free Entry and Food

Entry is free and food will be provided on the day, so come along to this open day as it is a great opportunity for any farmer thinking of modernising or expanding their facilities to see some of the different options available.
